The other half.
Three collections, and honestly not much connects them beyond my having made them and still liking how they look.
Crystals grown on a slide and photographed through crossed filters, where all the colour is a trick of the light. Curves that come out of equations. And a set of sheets that fold like cloth, built from a few thousand thin lines apiece.
Curtains
These are generated — a few hundred near-vertical strands per sheet, all sharing one smooth displacement field. That shared field is the whole trick: neighbouring strands move together, so it reads as cloth instead of noise. The dark creases aren't drawn anywhere. They're just where the field compresses hard enough that strands pile up and the ink stacks. Colour is assigned by where a strand starts, so it travels with the fold rather than sitting still on the page.
Math art
Every one of these is a picture of an equation, a dynamical system, or some physical process behaving the way it does. I find it hard to look away from the fact that arithmetic produces things this pretty without being asked to.
Crystal microphotography
Crystals grown on a slide and shot between crossed polarizing filters. None of this colour is pigment — the crystal splits the light in two, the halves fall out of step, and whatever survives when they recombine is what you see. Nudge the stage and it all changes.
